How to Set Up a VPN on Android in Under 2 Minutes
TL;DR: Download NordVPN from Google Play, sign in, tap Quick Connect or pick New Zealand, accept the connection request, done. Five steps, under two minutes. Works on any Android phone or tablet.
Why You're Here
Australia's age verification laws kicked in on March 9, 2026. Adult sites now require you to upload your ID, submit to facial scanning, or verify via credit card. If you'd rather not hand your passport to a third-party company you've never heard of, a VPN is the fix.
For context on which sites are actually blocked versus which require verification, see our full list of blocked Australian sites. If Pornhub specifically is your concern, see Pornhub Blocked in Australia — What Happened and How to Fix It for the full story.
This guide walks you through setting up NordVPN on Android. The whole thing takes less than two minutes. If you haven't picked a VPN yet, our VPN comparison guide covers all the options. If you're specifically trying to access Pornhub or other blocked sites, that guide also covers which server locations work best for Australians.
What You'll Need
- An Android phone or tablet running Android 8.0 or later (any phone from the last 7-8 years)
- A NordVPN subscription (~$4.59 AUD/month on the 2-year plan)
- Two minutes
Let's get into it.
Step 1: Download NordVPN from Google Play
Open the Google Play Store on your Android device. Search for NordVPN. Tap Install.
The app is about 80 MB. It'll download quickly on any decent connection. Make sure the developer listed is Nordsec Ltd — there are knockoff VPN apps with similar names that you want to avoid.
You can also sign up at nordvpn.com first if you want to compare plans on a bigger screen. Website signups sometimes surface promotional pricing that isn't available in-app.
Step 2: Open the App and Sign In
Launch NordVPN after installation. You'll land on the login screen.
- Existing account? Tap Log In and enter your credentials.
- New user? Tap Sign Up to create an account and choose a subscription.
NordVPN pricing (AUD):
- 2-year plan: ~$4.59/month (best value — this is what we recommend)
- 1-year plan: ~$7.49/month
- Monthly: ~$18.49/month
Every plan includes a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you decide a VPN isn't for you, you get a full refund. No questions asked.
Note on Google Play billing: If you subscribe through the app, Google Play handles the payment. This is fine, but you may find slightly better pricing by subscribing directly on nordvpn.com and then logging into the app. Promotional pricing varies — especially during sale periods — so it's worth checking both before committing.

Step 3: Connect to New Zealand
After signing in, you'll see a map with server locations and a Quick Connect button.
Option A — Quick Connect: Tap the Quick Connect button. NordVPN automatically selects the fastest nearby server. For Australian users, this typically picks a New Zealand or Singapore server — both of which bypass age verification.
Option B — Select New Zealand: Scroll the map or use the search bar to find New Zealand. Tap it to connect to an NZ server specifically.
Option C — Select Canada: Canada is a popular alternative to NZ, particularly for accessing North American streaming libraries. It's further geographically so speeds will be slightly lower, but if NZ servers are congested or you need a North American IP address, Canada is a solid fallback.
Why New Zealand? Geography matters with VPNs. NZ is the closest country to Australia that doesn't have age verification requirements. Closer = faster. You'll barely notice any speed difference compared to browsing without a VPN.
Step 4: Accept the Connection Request
The first time you connect, Android will display a system dialog:
"NordVPN wants to set up a VPN connection that allows it to monitor network traffic. Only accept if you trust the source."
Tap OK or Allow.
This is a standard Android security prompt. Every VPN app triggers it. Android is simply telling you that the app will route your internet traffic through its servers — which is literally the point of a VPN.
You may also need to confirm with your fingerprint, PIN, or pattern. This only happens once. Future connections are automatic.
A small key icon will appear in your status bar. That means the VPN is active and your traffic is encrypted.
Step 5: You're Connected — Browse Privately
Open Chrome, Firefox, or whatever browser you use and visit any site. Your traffic is now routed through New Zealand. Websites see an NZ IP address. No age verification. No blocks.
Want to verify? Visit whatismyipaddress.com in your browser. It should show a New Zealand location instead of your actual Australian one.
You're done. The whole process takes about 90 seconds once you've got the hang of it.
Recommended Settings
While you're in the NordVPN app, configure these for the best experience:
- Auto-connect on Wi-Fi: Settings → Auto-connect → enable for Wi-Fi networks. The VPN activates automatically whenever you connect to Wi-Fi. One less thing to remember.
- Auto-connect on mobile data: Same section. Enable this if you want VPN protection on 4G/5G too.
- Kill Switch: Settings → Kill Switch → enable. If the VPN drops, your internet pauses rather than reverting to your real IP. Essential for privacy.
- Threat Protection Lite: Blocks malicious websites and ads. Free with your subscription. Enable it.
Troubleshooting
VPN Won't Connect
Work through these steps:
- Toggle Airplane Mode. Turn it on, wait a few seconds, turn it off. This resets your network stack.
- Try a different server. Tap the current server name and pick a different NZ server, or try Singapore or Japan.
- Switch protocols. Go to NordVPN Settings → VPN Protocol. Try switching between NordLynx, OpenVPN (UDP), and OpenVPN (TCP). Some networks or ISPs block specific protocols.
- Check your base connection. Disconnect the VPN and make sure your internet works normally.
- Clear app cache. Android Settings → Apps → NordVPN → Storage → Clear Cache.
- Reinstall. Uninstall the app and download it fresh from Google Play.
Slow Speeds
- Use the closest server. NZ will always be faster from Australia than servers in Europe or the Americas.
- Switch to NordLynx. It's NordVPN's fastest protocol. Settings → VPN Protocol → NordLynx.
- Check for background apps. Android can have dozens of apps using data in the background. Close what you don't need.
- Try a different NZ server. Servers can get congested during peak times (7-11 PM AEST).
- Test your base speed. If your internet is slow without the VPN, the VPN can't make it faster. Run a speed test at speedtest.net with the VPN disconnected first.
You should expect roughly 70-85% of your normal speed through a VPN. On a 50 Mbps connection, that's 35-42 Mbps — more than enough for HD streaming.
ISP throttling (Optus and Telstra users)
If you're on Optus or Telstra and you're seeing consistently slow speeds even after switching protocols and servers, your ISP may be throttling VPN-encrypted traffic during peak hours. Both providers have form here.
Try these fixes:
- Switch to NordLynx (WireGuard-based, UDP port 51820) — it's harder to fingerprint than OpenVPN
- Try OpenVPN TCP on port 443 — this port carries standard HTTPS traffic and ISPs almost never throttle it
- Test during off-peak hours (before 5 PM or after midnight) to distinguish peak congestion from active throttling
For a deeper breakdown of what's happening and how to work around it, see our Optus VPN throttling guide.
Connection Drops
- Enable Kill Switch so your real IP isn't exposed during drops.
- Disable battery optimisation for NordVPN. This is the most common cause of VPN drops on Android. Go to Android Settings → Apps → NordVPN → Battery → select "Unrestricted" or "Don't optimise." Android aggressively kills background apps to save battery, and VPNs need to run continuously.
- Disable data saver. If you have Android's Data Saver enabled, it can interfere with VPN connections. Turn it off in Settings → Network → Data Saver.
- Update the app. Make sure you're running the latest version from Google Play.
"VPN Connection Failed" or Permission Issues
Some Android skins (Samsung One UI, Xiaomi MIUI, Huawei EMUI) have aggressive permission management. If NordVPN keeps losing its VPN permission:
- Go to Settings → Apps → NordVPN → Permissions and make sure all required permissions are granted.
- On Samsung: Settings → Battery and device care → Battery → Background usage limits → add NordVPN to "Never sleeping apps."
- On Xiaomi: Settings → Apps → Manage apps → NordVPN → Autostart → enable.
What About Other VPN Apps?
The process is nearly identical for Proton VPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, or any other reputable VPN:
- Download from Google Play
- Choose a server (New Zealand)
- Accept the connection request
- Browse
Different interface, same steps. If you're comparing options, check our NordVPN vs Proton VPN breakdown for the key differences. Or if Surfshark is on your radar, our NordVPN vs Surfshark comparison covers Australian speed tests, pricing, and which one suits different use cases. Our full Surfshark review goes even deeper.
Setting up NordVPN on Android TV or Google TV
If you're running a TV with Android TV or Google TV — Sony Bravia, Hisense with Google TV, Nvidia Shield, Chromecast with Google TV — the setup is nearly identical to a phone, just with a remote instead of a touchscreen.
What you'll need: Android TV or Google TV device, NordVPN subscription (same account as your phone)
- From your TV home screen, open the Google Play Store
- Search for NordVPN — it has a dedicated TV-optimised app
- Install and open NordVPN, then sign in with your account
- Navigate to server selection and choose New Zealand
- Select Connect
The NordVPN Android TV app uses big remote-friendly buttons. Once connected, all streaming apps on the TV — Netflix, Stan, YouTube — route through the VPN. This means no age verification prompts on any app.
Don't have Google Play on your TV? Samsung (Tizen), LG (webOS), and Apple TV don't run Android. For those, you'd need to configure VPN at the router level, which pushes all devices on your home network through the VPN at once. It's more involved — our NordVPN vs Surfshark comparison covers which providers have the best router support if that's the path you're going down.

FAQ
Yes. VPNs are completely legal in Australia. There is no law that prohibits using a VPN to access legal content. The age verification legislation places obligations on websites, not on individual users. Australians use VPNs every day for remote work, privacy, and security without any legal issue.
NordVPN is the pick for most people — fast NZ servers (closest to Australia), solid Android app, and up to 10 simultaneous device connections at around $4.59 AUD/month on the 2-year plan. If budget matters more, Surfshark is $3.49 AUD/month with unlimited devices. For the full comparison, see our best VPN Australia guide or our NordVPN review for a deep-dive.
NordVPN costs approximately $4.59 AUD/month on the 2-year plan (best value), $7.49 AUD/month on the 1-year plan, or $18.49 AUD/month monthly. One subscription covers up to 10 devices simultaneously. All plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you want the cheapest reputable option, Surfshark is around $3.49 AUD/month on the 2-year plan with unlimited devices.
Optus and Telstra both throttle VPN connections during peak hours (roughly 7–11 PM AEST). If you're seeing consistently slow speeds, switch your protocol: go to NordVPN Settings → VPN Protocol → NordLynx. NordLynx is WireGuard-based and harder for ISPs to fingerprint. If NordLynx doesn't help, try OpenVPN TCP on port 443 — ISPs almost never throttle that port since it's standard HTTPS traffic. See our Optus VPN throttling guide for a detailed breakdown.
Slightly. Running a VPN adds encryption overhead, which uses extra processing power and battery. In practice, expect about 5-15% more battery drain depending on your usage. Enabling auto-connect only for Wi-Fi (and not mobile data) can help if battery life is tight. Modern phones handle it fine — you'll barely notice.
Yes. A single NordVPN subscription covers up to 10 simultaneous connections. Use it on your Android phone, tablet, laptop, and partner's devices all at once. Install the app on each device and sign in with the same account.
Yes — that's the whole point. Australia's age verification laws apply to websites based on your apparent location. When you connect to a VPN server overseas (e.g. New Zealand), websites see a New Zealand IP address and serve you content without age verification requirements. The verification gate is triggered by your location, and a VPN changes your apparent location to somewhere that doesn't have those laws.
We don't recommend free VPNs for anything involving age verification or personal browsing. Free VPNs typically log your traffic, cap your data, and in documented cases have sold user data to third parties. For the full breakdown of risks, see our free VPN vs paid VPN comparison. NordVPN at ~$4.59/month AUD is a small price for actual privacy. If you need a free option, Proton VPN's free tier is the only one we'd recommend — it's genuinely private but slower and has no NZ servers.
